Meaning
Reduction in the force of a steam supply as it travels through a central distribution pipe towards individual pieces of equipment. Factors such as pipe diameter and insulation quality determine the magnitude of the steam header pressure drop in a factory. It represents a loss of potential energy that cannot be recovered by the process.
Flow Mechanism
Friction against the internal walls of the header causes the pressure to decrease as the distance from the boiler increases. A substantial steam header pressure drop indicates that the distribution system is either overextended or poorly maintained.
Thermal Efficiency
Excessive loss of pressure requires the boiler to operate at a higher set point to deliver the required energy to the machines. While steam header pressure drop is inevitable in any physical system, minimizing it is a primary goal of thermal engineering. High drops lead to condensation and water hammer that damage valves.
Process Integrity
Machines at the end of the line may fail to reach the temperature needed for a successful production run if the delivery pressure is too low. Measuring the steam header pressure drop during a full load test reveals the true capability of the energy plant. This measurement acts as an audit of the facility’s utility infrastructure.
