Meaning
In-mold dynamic pressure measurements captured by quartz crystal transducer sensors mounted behind ejector pins or directly in the mold wall monitor polymer melt behavior inside tooling cavities in real time. Piezoelectric cavity pressure records the electric charge generated when molten resin exerts physical force on the transducer face during injection, packing, and cooling phases. The scope covers transient pressure curves inside the mold cavity during the molding cycle, ending where hydraulic or electric drive pressures at the machine screw are recorded.
Sensing Mechanism
Piezoelectric crystals generate an electrical charge directly proportional to applied mechanical stress, capturing microsecond pressure shifts during polymer injection. Piezoelectric cavity pressure curves display distinct stages including initial melt arrival, peak cavity pressure, switchover from velocity to pressure control, and gate freeze-off timing. Monitoring the integral of this pressure curve provides a direct fingerprint of part mass, wall thickness, and internal stress formation.
Automatic reject gates utilize cavity pressure thresholds to segregate short-filled or overpacked parts instantly.
Readiness Verification
Tool qualification requires instrumenting sentinel cavities with piezoelectric sensors to establish repeatable process windows before commercial production. Relying solely on machine hydraulic pressure during pilot runs masks significant cavity-level variations caused by check-ring leakage or viscosity changes. Declaring production readiness without in-mold cavity pressure validation leaves the molding cell vulnerable to undetected flash or sink marks when ambient factory temperatures alter melt cooling rates.
Process Control
Machine controllers use dynamic cavity pressure feedback to trigger injection-to-pack transfer, decoupling part quality from machine wear and viscosity shifts.
