Meaning
A factory acceptance test evaluates a complete assembly of rotating machinery, including the driver, coupling and driven unit, running together as a single system. Conducting string testing rotating equipment verifies the dynamic compatibility and mechanical integrity of the entire train before shipment to the plant site. It is performed at the manufacturer’s facility and does not apply to isolated component tests.
Dynamic Verification
Individual component certificates cannot guarantee that a multi-machine train will operate smoothly under loaded conditions. Applying string testing rotating equipment helps engineers detect torsional vibrations and alignment issues that only appear when the machines are coupled together. This verification reduces the risk of expensive onsite failures.
Formal Trials
Trials of the complete setup require a dedicated test stand with calibrated instrumentation. During string testing rotating equipment, the combined units are run at varying speeds to monitor bearing temperatures, oil pressures and vibration levels. For instance, a test train consisting of a high-pressure compressor, a gear box and a five-megawatt electric motor must run continuously for four hours at maximum operating speed to confirm that the shaft vibration remains within acceptable limits and that the oil lubrication system operates without leaks.
Onsite Mitigation
Field corrections of misaligned heavy machinery are difficult and expensive to execute. Completing string testing rotating equipment ensures that any design or manufacturing defects are corrected before the train is shipped. This verification accelerates the onsite startup phase.
