Meaning
Unintended bending or warping of a press mounting surface under high clamping force. Excessive platen deflection occurs when the force applied by the tie bars or hydraulic ram exceeds the structural rigidity of the machine plates. This movement leads to uneven pressure across the mold face.
Dimensional Accuracy
Parts produced on a machine with significant flexing often show variation in thickness or detail. Since platen deflection is most pronounced at the center of the plate, the cavities located there may experience less clamping force than those near the edges. The resulting pressure discrepancy causes flash on some parts while others remain within tolerance.
Mold Protection
Excessive movement during the injection phase can cause the two halves of the tool to rub or crash. Because platen deflection changes the alignment of the guide pins, it accelerates wear on expensive mold components. High stiffness platens are preferred for high pressure applications to maintain parallel surfaces throughout the cycle.
Measurement Protocol
Dial indicators or laser tracking systems monitor the gap between the platens during the clamping stroke. Accuracy matters. If platen deflection is detected beyond the manufacturer’s limit, the clamping force must be reduced or the tool moved to a larger press.
Fixing the issue early prevents long-term damage to the machine frame and ensures consistent part quality. Operators rely on these readings to maintain the structural health of the heavy machinery over many years of service. Regular maintenance is required.
