Meaning
Diagnostic metrics in injection molding measure the rate at which pressure drops inside the mold cavity after the polymer injection phase is complete. This monitoring of cavity pressure decay establishes whether the gate has frozen and the polymer has sufficiently solidified before mold opening. The measurement ends once the pressure reaches atmospheric levels or the mold is opened.
Cooling Behavior
Real-time pressure sensors track how thermal changes influence the pressure within the cavity. When the polymer transitions from a hot melt to a rigid structure, the volume contracts and the pressure drops. Slow cavity pressure decay indicates that the mold cooling channels might be partially blocked.
Faster rates point to high heat transfer or a short cycle time. If the cooling is uneven, the decay curve shows an irregular slope that departs from the standard profile.
Molding Performance
Machine operators rely on these pressure profiles to adjust holding times. Excessively high pressure at the end of the decay cycle suggests risk of part sticking or flash. Conversely, low remaining pressure indicates a risk of sink marks.
Cycle Metric
Peak pressure values and decay rates are recorded to maintain part consistency across batches. A steady rate ensures that every piece has the same structural density. Variations in the decay profile alert technicians to potential defects before the parts are ejected.
