Meaning
Manufacturing process for shaping polyvinyl chloride resin into specific components using heat and pressure. Chemical resistance and flame retardancy make pvc molding a standard choice for medical and construction applications.
Thermal Management
Rigid and flexible grades of the material require tight temperature windows during the melt phase. If the heat rises too high during pvc molding, the material releases hydrochloric acid gas which corrodes the steel tools. Cooling circuits in the mold must be efficient to handle the low thermal conductivity of the polymer.
Tooling Specification
Stainless steel or plated surfaces are necessary to prevent surface degradation from the acidic byproducts of the process. Venting for pvc molding must be deeper than for other plastics to allow gas to escape without creating burn marks. High shear at the gate can cause localized overheating and material breakdown.
Production Cycle
Cycle times for this process tend to be longer than for polyethylene or polypropylene due to the cooling requirements. Achieving a stable production yield requires a machine with high injection pressure and a corrosion resistant screw. Operators must purge the barrel immediately after a run to prevent the stagnant material from degrading inside the equipment.
Corrosive gas release represents the primary cost of failing to control the process temperature.
