Meaning
Hydraulic resistance metrics quantify the loss of fluid force between two points along a constrained flow channel. Tooling designers evaluate pressure drop to ensure pump or injection unit capacity matches channel resistance across runners and dies. The parameter determines required machine injection pressure, volumetric flow rates and energy consumption during fluid transport.
The valid scope covers viscous fluid flow through manifolds, nozzles and mold cavity geometry, ending at the atmospheric vent or fill front.
Flow Resistance
Viscous shear stresses along channel walls resist fluid displacement, creating a continuous drop in static pressure along the flow length. Calculating pressure drop incorporates fluid viscosity, wall friction, channel cross section and volumetric velocity through Hagen Poiseuille flow relationships adjusted for non-Newtonian behavior. Narrow gate geometry or restrictive runner systems increase flow resistance rapidly, requiring elevated driving pressures to maintain target fill rates.
Low speed prototype sampling understates actual pressure requirements because shear thinning and viscous heating alter effective viscosity at commercial production speeds. Demonstrating process feasibility requires measuring real time cavity pressure profiles at target cycle times to confirm machine pressure reserves.
Audit Protocol
Piezoelectric pressure sensors installed upstream and downstream of flow restrictions record dynamic pressure differentials throughout the injection cycle. Excessive pressure drop reduces peak packing pressure, causing volumetric sink marks and internal void formation in thick wall sections. Process readiness depends on verifying that maximum injection pressure requirements remain below eighty percent of available machine capacity during continuous manufacturing runs.
Capacity Boundary
Exceeding available machine hydraulic pressure causes incomplete filling and unpredictable part dimensions. Tooling modifications or higher melt temperatures must be applied to lower flow resistance before commercial release.
