Meaning
Electrical distribution issues arise when current is drawn unequally across the three phases of a three-phase power system. A transformer phase imbalance causes increased heat generation, reduced efficiency, and potential damage to connected equipment. This problem occurs when heavy single-phase loads, like heaters or office areas, are connected to a single phase of the distribution board.
Equipment Degradation
Excessive heat caused by unequal loading can degrade the insulation of the transformer, shortening its operational lifespan. When a transformer phase imbalance exceeds three percent, the risk of premature failure of the insulation increases significantly. This wear can lead to sudden electrical faults and unplanned factory blackouts.
Remedial Action
Redistributing single-phase loads across all three phases balances the current draw and restores system efficiency. If the transformer phase imbalance is detected early during routine thermal imaging, engineers can re-terminate cables to achieve a balanced load. This adjustment must be carried out during a scheduled maintenance window.
Diagnostic Monitoring
Power quality analyzers connected to the main switchboard continuously monitor the voltage and current on each phase. If the transformer phase imbalance exceeds pre-set limits, the system sends an automated alert to the maintenance team. This notification enables technicians to investigate the cause of the imbalance before it damages expensive electric motors or trips the main circuit breakers, protecting the plant from expensive downtime and securing the stability of the electrical infrastructure.
