Meaning
A threaded fastening element designed to adjust the gap in mechanical assemblies by lengthening or shortening in response to controlled temperature changes. Extrusion systems employ a thermal expansion bolt to control the precise positioning of the die lip.
Heater Integration
Electric cartridge heaters embedded within the fastener raise its temperature on demand. This localized heating causes the metal shaft to elongate along its longitudinal axis. When the heating current is removed, the bolt cools and contracts to its original length.
Mechanical Torque
Initial tension must be established during assembly to ensure the bolt operates within its elastic range. If the pre-load torque is too low, the thermal adjustments will fail to alter the gap. Correct pre-loading prevents the fastener from loosening under the high internal pressures of the process.
Response Latency
Adjusting the gap through heating requires time for the thermal energy to distribute through the steel body. This heat transfer rate depends on the thermal conductivity of the alloy and the wattage of the cartridge. If the control loop requires rapid corrections, this thermal lag can cause a delay in achieving the target sheet thickness.
When the system operates under steady-state conditions, this slower adjustment rate provides a stabilizing effect that prevents process oscillation.
