Meaning
Performance test designed to prove that a manufacturing process can sustain a target output level under production conditions. Conducting a run at rate qualification involves operating the equipment for a continuous period at the speed required for mass production. This exercise identifies whether the machinery, the staff, the supply chain and the maintenance schedule can meet the customer demand forecast.
It serves to expose weaknesses in the cooling system or the material handling logic before the final commitment.
Net Throughput
Measurement of the actual units produced per hour determines the readiness for full scale launch. The net throughput excludes the setup time and the scheduled breaks.
Yield Stability
Maintenance of quality standards at high speeds prevents the generation of excessive waste. If the defect rate increases as the machine speed rises, the process is not yet stable enough for production. Demonstrated yield during the run must match the pilot phase results to be accepted.
Tooling Endurance
Evaluation of the wear on molds or cutting edges ensures that the output remains consistent over long cycles. High volume production often reveals thermal issues that a short sample run misses. The condition of the tool after the test determines the maintenance schedule for the first year of operation.
