Meaning
Temperature difference measured between the geometric center and the outer boundary of a cylindrical or spherical component. During the cooling of a cast metal part, a steep radial thermal gradient can cause the exterior to solidify while the interior remains liquid. This mismatch creates internal voids and structural weaknesses that often lead to failure under load.
Engineers must control the rate of cooling to minimize these differences and ensure a uniform grain structure throughout the part.
Heat Flux
Energy moves from the hot core to the cooler surface or vice versa. The speed of this movement depends on the thermal conductivity of the material. Managing this flux is essential to prevent internal stresses from building up during the manufacturing process.
Stress Profile
If the outside cools much faster than the inside, the material can crack or warp. Engineers use slow cooling processes to minimize these internal forces. A flat gradient is usually the goal for high strength components used in critical applications.
Uniformity Standard
Precise sensors monitor the temperature at various depths to ensure the part is heating evenly. These standards are especially strict in the aerospace and semiconductor industries. Achieving uniformity is the biggest challenge in large scale thermal processing.
