Meaning
A transparent thermoplastic polymer often used as a lightweight and shatter-resistant alternative to glass provides high optical clarity in industrial applications. Commonly known as polymethyl methacrylate, this material is widely specified for protective barriers and display panels. Its physical properties make it suitable for environments requiring high impact resistance.
Material Property
Excellent light transmission and weather resistance allow this polymer to maintain clarity during outdoor exposure. It exhibits high scratch resistance compared to other clear plastics, although it remains susceptible to abrasive wear. The compound is also resistant to many inorganic chemicals, though it can be damaged by strong solvents.
Processing Method
Injection molding and extrusion are the primary techniques used to shape this resin into finished components. Precision tooling is required to prevent defects such as sink marks or internal stresses during the cooling phase. When processing polymethyl methacrylate, operators must carefully control the melt temperature to avoid thermal degradation that can cause yellowing and loss of structural strength.
Proper drying before processing prevents moisture bubbles from forming in the molded parts.
Application Constraint
Limited high-temperature tolerance prevents the use of this polymer in environments exceeding ninety degrees Celsius. Under sustained mechanical loads, the material can also exhibit stress crazing over time.
