Meaning
Longitudinal expansion of a press connecting rod due to heat generation during operation affects the shut height of the press. Managing pitman thermal growth prevents the punch from penetrating too deeply into the die as the press warms up. This physical expansion occurs as friction in the bearings and motor heat transfer to the structural steel.
Thermal Drift
Continuous high-speed operation generates substantial heat in the main crankpin and pitman bearings. This heat flows into the pitman arm, causing pitman thermal growth that increases the effective length of the rod. The resulting change in shut height must be compensated for during the run.
Shut Height
The shut height determines the closest distance between the slide and the bolster plate at the bottom of the stroke. As pitman thermal growth reduces this distance, the tool closes more tightly than intended.
Production Warmup
Auditing the thermal profile during the warmup cycle ensures that part dimensions remain stable. Although a cold press produces parts that meet the drawing specifications, pitman thermal growth will alter the punch position once the machine reaches operating temperature. Starting full-speed production before conducting this thermal audit results in tool damage as the punch begins to bottom out.
Stamping lines operate most consistently when the control system automatically adjusts the slide position based on thermal sensors.
