Meaning
A mechanical positioning device that utilizes a sliding wedge to achieve sub-micron adjustments of tool height is used in high-precision stamping. Employing a micro-wedge actuator allows the operator to control the punch penetration depth with extreme precision. This mechanism converts lateral displacement into vertical movement through a low-angle inclined plane.
Adjustment Mechanism
Precise height adjustments are difficult to achieve with standard screw threads because of backlash and coarse pitch. The micro-wedge actuator bypasses this limitation by using a shallow wedge angle to divide the lateral drive movement. This design translates a relatively large horizontal stroke into a minute vertical shift.
Tool Control
Stamping ultra-thin metal foils requires exact control of the tool gap to prevent tearing. The use of a micro-wedge actuator prevents variations in the tool height that would ruin the material.
Fine Tuning
Validating the wedge movement under heavy press loads is necessary before starting a production run. While manual trials might show accurate adjustments, high-volume operations need a micro-wedge actuator that can withstand repeated impacts without shifting. The consequence of failing to test this stability is that the actuator may drift, causing incorrect part dimensions.
Precision stamping setups maintain their tight tolerances when the wedge positions are locked securely.
