Meaning
Monitoring instruments installed at the entry point of a plasticizing unit track the flow and temperature of raw materials. This device is known as a machine feed throat sensor, which governs the tracking of polymer resin as it falls from the hopper into the screw. The device does not measure downstream melt pressure or cavity conditions.
Flow Detection
Blockages in the supply neck of an extruder or injection molding machine can stop production without warning. A machine feed throat sensor detects when the material flow is interrupted by bridging or clumping. This immediate alert allows operators to clear the blockage before the screw runs dry, which would cause severe thermal degradation of the material left in the barrel.
The sensor helps prevent machine downtime and protects the molding screw from running empty.
Thermal Stability
Excessive heat rising from the barrel can melt the resin prematurely in the feed throat. By using a machine feed throat sensor that includes a thermocouple, the cooling system’s performance is monitored. If the temperature rises too high, the sensor triggers an increase in cooling water flow to prevent bridging.
This control loop is essential for maintaining a steady feed rate during long production runs.
Process Integration
Modern molding setups connect these entry-point instruments directly to the central factory control system. Integrating the machine feed throat sensor into the wider network allows for real-time tracking of resin consumption. This data is useful for inventory management and for calculating the actual yield of the manufacturing process.
