Meaning
Industrial material preparation systems use chemical adsorbents to extract water vapor from plastic resins before they enter the molding machine. A desiccant hopper dryer maintains a closed loop of dry, heated air that passes through the resin bed to ensure uniform moisture removal. This process is necessary for hygroscopic materials like nylon or polycarbonate that absorb water from the air.
Without proper drying, parts may suffer from surface defects or internal structural failure.
Moisture Removal
Porous beads inside the drying tanks capture water molecules from the circulating air stream. The desiccant hopper dryer alternates between two or more tanks so that one can be regenerated with high heat while the others are in use. This ensures a continuous supply of air with a very low moisture content.
Resin Condition
Heat inside the hopper increases the molecular energy of the water trapped inside the plastic pellets. A desiccant hopper dryer must be sized correctly for the throughput of the machine to allow for adequate residence time. If the material moves through the hopper too quickly, it will not reach the required dryness level.
Airflow Path
Uniform air distribution is required to prevent cold spots or channeling within the resin bed. Modern designs for a desiccant hopper dryer use specialized diffusers to ensure that every pellet is exposed to the same drying conditions. Consistent airflow prevents the variations in moisture that lead to production scrap.
