Meaning
Ingress prevention process defines the introduction of a pressurized fluid or gas into the winding channels of a non-contacting seal to block the entry of external contaminants. Through labyrinth seal purge, industrial rotating machinery maintains a positive internal pressure that forces dust and moisture away from the internal bearing housing. This pressurized barrier is necessary in high-contamination environments such as mining, paper manufacturing, and wastewater treatment plants.
Mechanical Barrier
Complex pathways within the seal housing create a tortuous route that slows down any entering particulates. By adding a pressurized air stream to this winding path, the seal creates a continuous outward flow that sweeps away fine dust before it can reach the lubricant. This air stream protects the precision rolling elements from abrasive wear.
Lubricant Protection
Contaminated oil leads directly to accelerated metal-to-metal contact and rapid bearing failure. If water or process liquids bypass the non-contact seal, they emulsify the oil and destroy its load-bearing capability. A steady purge ensures that the lubricating film remains pure and effective over millions of shaft rotations.
Operational Pressure
Precise control of purge air pressure prevents the air from driving the bearing lubricant out of the housing. Too much pressure can disrupt the internal oil spray or mist, causing dry running and thermal failure. Setting the air pressure just above the ambient atmospheric level achieves the necessary balance.
