Meaning
Soft metal sealing components provide vacuum-tight junctions by deforming under mechanical pressure to fill microscopic imperfections in mating flanges. In cryogenic and ultra-high vacuum systems, an indium foil gasket is positioned between hard metal faces to prevent gas leaks.
Plastic Deformation
Low yield strength allows the material to flow into microscopic valleys under low bolt torque. This cold-flow behavior ensures that the indium foil gasket forms a continuous seal without damaging delicate optical windows or brittle crystal substrates. The joint remains hermetic even as the assembly undergoes extreme thermal contraction.
This deformation is permanent, which means that the gasket must be replaced every time the flange assembly is disassembled for maintenance.
Thermal Conductivity
Heat transfer across the vacuum boundary relies heavily on the solid metal-to-metal contact achieved by the squashed foil. In cryocooler assemblies, the high thermal conductivity of the gasket material reduces the temperature gradient between the cooling head and the mounted sample.
Operational Limit
Temperatures exceeding the melting point of the soft metal destroy the seal entirely. Because indium melts at approximately one hundred and fifty-six degrees Celsius, this method is unsuitable for high-temperature bakeout procedures. System operators must verify the maximum operating temperature before selecting this sealing method.
