Meaning
In-line measurement devices exploit the deflection caused by fluid momentum passing through vibrating tubes to determine true mass flow directly. Industrial process control relies on a coriolis meter to capture fluid mass independent of changing temperature, pressure, viscosity or density profile. Calibration runs evaluate device zero stability before approving equipment for custody transfer service.
Installing a unit without vibration isolation dampens tube oscillation and corrupts mass calculations.
Flow Calibration
Mass flow verification requires precise mechanical vibration of dual parallel sensor tubes at their natural resonant frequency. A coriolis meter measures the minute phase shift between pick-off coils located on the inlet and outlet sections of the vibrating tube assembly. Liquid flow introduces inertial forces that twist the sensor structure, producing a phase delay directly proportional to mass flow rate.
Calibration protocols test meter response across high and low turnover ranges to establish baseline accuracy. Distorted flow profiles from nearby pump discharge valves degrade phase angle measurement integrity.
Density Measurement
Fluid density determination occurs simultaneously by monitoring changes in the natural resonant frequency of the sensor housing. Processing plants monitor fluid density to detect phase transitions and product quality boundaries in real time. Frequency shifts reflect total fluid mass contained within fixed tube volumes during continuous operation.
Entrained gas bubbles alter the bulk fluid compressibility, shifting tube vibration frequencies away from true fluid values.
Signal Stability
High vibration environments present operational challenges for delicate electronic pickup sensors. Process piping systems transmit structural noise that interferes with low amplitude tube oscillations. Installing flexible pipe couplings and rigid structural supports isolates the instrument from external mechanical interference.
Early signal validation prevents false flow alarms during plant ramp.
