Meaning
A specialized validation methodology establishes the thermal performance and structural integrity of 3D-printed fluid channels within injection molds. This methodology, known as conformal cooling qualification, ensures that complex internal channels are free of residual powder and can withstand high-pressure water flow. It does not apply to conventional straight-drilled cooling lines.
The boundary of its application is the finished tool ready for injection testing.
Operational Capability
Flow rate tests confirm that the printed channel design delivers the required heat transfer rate. During conformal cooling qualification, engineers measure pressure drops to detect internal obstructions or surface roughness that impedes fluid movement. This verification proves that the channel can handle the necessary volumetric flow.
If executed too late, correcting a failure requires scrap and reprint.
Thermal Stability
Thermal imaging under load confirms that the tooling surface maintains a uniform temperature field during rapid cycling. Successful conformal cooling qualification prevents local temperature spikes that lead to part warping or extended cycle times in production. By verifying uniform heat extraction during the trial runs, the process guarantees that the tool performs reliably under continuous thermal load.
Defect Prevention
A primary benefit is the elimination of hot spots and residual stress. Early conformal cooling qualification prevents the mold from failing. Scrap rates drop.
