Meaning
Temperature profiles within a reflow oven establish a controlled holding region where the circuit board assembly is kept at a constant temperature to activate the solder flux. Passing through the thermal reflow soak zone ensures that all components, regardless of their size or mass, reach a uniform temperature before entering the melting phase. The zone is positioned between the initial pre-heat and the final reflow stages of the oven.
Flux Activation
Chemical agents within the solder paste must remove oxides from the copper pads to ensure a strong solder joint. The thermal reflow soak zone allows these chemical reactions to occur completely without overheating the delicate silicon components. If the soak time is too short, the joint quality will suffer.
Delta T Reduction
Large microprocessors and tiny capacitors absorb heat at different rates due to their differing thermal masses. Maintaining a steady temperature during the soak phase allows the entire board to equalize, reducing the temperature difference across the assembly. This equalization prevents defects like tombstoning, where small components stand up on end.
Oven Calibration
Reflow technicians use profiles from temperature-monitoring boards to adjust the heating elements in each oven chamber. Precise calibration of the soak phase is essential for lead-free solder alloys, which have a narrow process window. These regular adjustments ensure consistent quality across different production runs.
