Meaning
Dimensional and structural balance achieved by a molded thermoplastic component after it has fully cooled and absorbed its natural level of ambient moisture defines the benchmark for quality inspections. Quality technicians analyze post molding equilibrium to ensure that part measurements are not taken while the polymer is still shrinking or absorbing water. This state establishes a stable baseline for verifying whether the component meets the tolerances required for assembly.
The measurement phase does not begin until the parts have sat in a controlled environment for the specified hours.
Cooling Analysis
Parts measured immediately after ejection from the tool are still warm and will shrink as they cool to room temperature. This change is particularly pronounced in crystalline polymers that continue to crystallize for hours after molding. When analyzing post molding equilibrium, the molder must establish how long the parts need to rest before their dimensions stabilize.
This waiting period prevents the incorrect rejection of good parts that would have reached their correct size after cooling.
Moisture Absorption
Hygroscopic materials such as nylon absorb moisture from the air, which increases their toughness and slightly changes their size. This absorption continues until the part reaches a balance with the humidity of its environment. Measuring the part too early, before this balance is reached, can lead to incorrect conclusions about its performance in the field.
This conditioning step must be completed before the final quality audit can be signed off.
Audit Schedule
Establishing the correct holding time before inspection ensures that all quality checks are consistent. This scheduling rule prevents disputes between the molder and the customer regarding part dimensions. It is the basis for reliable production releases.
