Meaning
Fluid dynamics process using a high-velocity, uniform sheet of air removes contaminants or moisture from a surface without introducing turbulence. Regular use of a laminar air knife purge is common in glass manufacturing and semiconductor assembly to keep sensitive layers clean. The air is forced through a narrow slot to create a focused curtain of pressure.
Flow Velocity
Speed of the air stream determines the force available to push debris away from the target area. A laminar air knife purge must be tuned so that the air remains in a smooth sheet rather than breaking up into eddies that could trap dust. High-pressure blowers provide the energy needed to maintain this velocity across the entire width of the tool.
Surface Interaction
Angle of the air curtain relative to the workpiece affects the efficiency of the cleaning action. When a laminar air knife purge is angled correctly, it shears away water or particles and carries them into a collection system. If the angle is too steep, the air can drive contaminants into the surface instead of removing them.
Pressure Requirement
Consistent performance depends on maintaining a steady supply of clean, dry air to the knife plenum. Fluctuations in the delivery system can cause the laminar air knife purge to flicker, leading to spots or streaks on the product. Filters and regulators are installed upstream to ensure that the air is free of oil and at the correct pressure.
