Meaning
Formal criteria establish the procedures for deciding whether a product meets a specification based on the measured value and the associated measurement uncertainty. Applying iso 14253 decision rules prevents the acceptance of non-conforming parts when the measurement result is too close to the tolerance limit. It defines a buffer zone where the risk of an incorrect decision is managed.
Guard Banding
Limits are adjusted inward from the nominal tolerance to account for the margin of error in the measurement system. Under iso 14253 decision rules, a part is only accepted if the measured value plus the expanded uncertainty remains within the specified range. This creates a zone of rejection near the tolerance boundaries where the quality of the part cannot be proven with certainty.
It protects the customer from receiving parts that are technically out of spec but measured as being in spec.
Supplier Agreement
Contractual clarity is achieved when both the buyer and the seller agree on how to handle measurements in the uncertainty zone. Use of iso 14253 decision rules ensures that the supplier takes responsibility for the measurement quality by tightening their internal limits. If the uncertainty is high, the effective tolerance for production becomes very small.
This incentivises the use of more accurate measuring equipment to regain the lost tolerance.
Quality Assurance
Reliability of the final product increases when measurement doubt is transparently managed. Following iso 14253 decision rules reduces the probability of false acceptance, which is the most dangerous type of error in safety-critical industries. While it may lead to higher scrap rates in the short term, it ensures that every part shipped is demonstrably within the required limits.
Clear rules eliminate arguments between quality departments over borderline measurements.
