Meaning
Geometric alignment defines the position of the principal symmetry axis in a hexagonal or tetragonal crystal system. The c-axis orientation dictates the thermal, electrical and optical properties of the finished component. It is the primary reference for cutting and polishing crystalline materials like sapphire.
Angular Alignment
Precision measurement using x-ray diffraction confirms the deviation of the physical surface from the atomic plane. If the c-axis orientation is off by even a fraction of a degree, the performance of the device may suffer. Most production runs require an accuracy within 0.05 degrees to ensure consistency.
Property Variance
Thermal expansion and heat conduction vary significantly depending on the direction relative to the main axis. A specific c-axis orientation is chosen to maximize durability or to match the expansion of a surrounding metal frame. This choice is a capability decision made during the design phase of a sapphire window or semiconductor substrate.
Fabrication Constraint
Machining speeds and tool wear are directly influenced by the angle of the lattice during the grinding process. Correcting a misplaced c-axis orientation after the first cut is usually impossible, leading to the loss of the entire workpiece. The cost of calling the orientation early without verification is the destruction of expensive raw material.
