Meaning
Power quality logs record the magnitude of momentary drops in line voltage relative to the nominal rating. Voltage sag depth expresses the remaining voltage or the percentage drop during an electrical disturbance. It provides a metric for evaluating whether sensitive industrial equipment will remain operational or trigger a safety shutdown.
Disturbance Magnitude
Electrical faults on the utility grid or the starting of large motors can pull the supply voltage down for several cycles. Measurement of the voltage sag depth allows engineers to identify the severity of the event. A drop to 70 percent of nominal voltage is a common threshold where many motor starters will drop out.
Equipment Tolerance
Manufacturers specify how well their controllers handle fluctuations in the power supply. Understanding the voltage sag depth helps in the selection of uninterruptible power supplies or constant voltage transformers. If the recorded depth exceeds the design limits of the machine, the production line will stop.
Event Duration
Short dips are often ignored by heavy mechanical systems but can be catastrophic for digital logic. While the voltage sag depth measures the severity, the duration determines the total energy loss to the system. Most automated cells require a ride-through capability to bridge these gaps without losing position data or damaging the tooling.
