Meaning
Industrial machinery supports use elastomeric or composite materials to reduce the transmission of mechanical noise and energy to the surrounding floor. Equipment installers place a vibration isolation pad beneath heavy motors or presses to absorb high-frequency oscillations. This decoupling protects delicate nearby instruments from being disturbed by the operation of heavy machinery.
The selection of the pad depends on the weight and operating frequency of the machine.
Acoustic Performance
Factories with heavy stamping presses or high-speed turbines generate high levels of structure-borne noise that can travel through concrete floors and disturb workers or nearby processes. Acoustic engineers use a vibration isolation pad to break the physical connection between the machine’s base and the building’s foundation. This isolation dampens the vibrations and reduces the overall noise level on the production floor.
If the pads are omitted or incorrectly sized, the vibrations can cause drywalls to rattle and pipe fittings to loosen over time. Installing these dampening layers during the initial equipment setup prevents these problems and improves the working environment. Dynamic testing measures the reduction in decibel levels and vibration amplitude to confirm that the isolation pads are working as intended.
Material Selection
Elastomeric polymers and natural cork offer different dampening characteristics to suit various equipment weights and frequencies. The choice of a vibration isolation pad requires matching the material’s stiffness to the static load of the machine. If the pad is too soft, it compresses completely and loses its isolation properties.
If the material is too stiff, it acts as a rigid support and transmits the vibrations directly to the floor.
Equipment Maintenance
Routine inspections check the physical condition of the dampening materials to ensure they have not degraded due to oil spills or age-related hardening. Replacing a vibration isolation pad when it shows signs of wear prevents the machine from becoming misaligned or suffered from excessive wear. Regular maintenance checks identify pads that have become brittle or lost their elastic properties.
Keeping the dampening systems in good condition protects both the machinery and the factory floor from long-term fatigue damage.
