Meaning
Mechanical barrier systems protect the high speed rotating components of a machine tool from environmental contamination. A spindle bearing air seal uses a pressurized curtain of air to prevent coolant and metal grinding dust from entering the bearing housing. This non contact method provides protection without the friction and heat associated with traditional rubber seals.
Particulate Exclusion
Machining processes generate fine particles that can quickly destroy the mirror finish of a precision bearing. The spindle bearing air seal creates a constant outward flow that pushes these contaminants away from the gap. This is the primary defense for spindles that operate at speeds exceeding ten thousand revolutions per minute.
Coolant Barrier
High pressure spray used to cool the cutting tool can easily bypass mechanical seals through capillary action. By maintaining a positive internal pressure, the spindle bearing air seal ensures that no liquid can penetrate the housing. This prevents the dilution of the bearing grease and the subsequent metal on metal contact that leads to seizure.
Tool Longevity
Spindles are among the most expensive components of a CNC machine to repair or replace. A spindle bearing air seal extends the interval between overhauls by maintaining a pristine operating environment. Machines that run without this air supply typically experience bearing failure within months of installation in a high volume production environment.
