Meaning
Industry performance standards specify the minimum immunity of semiconductor processing tools to voltage sags occurring on the electrical supply grid. Adherence to semi f47 ensures that expensive production runs are not ruined by minor flickers or momentary drops in utility power. The standard defines a curve of voltage versus time that the equipment must be able to ride through.
It applies to all tools used in the fabrication and testing of semiconductor devices.
Sag Duration
Equipment must remain operational during a fifty percent sag lasting up to two hundred milliseconds. While many industrial devices trip instantly during a disturbance, a tool compliant with semi f47 ignores these brief events. This immunity prevents the loss of wafers that are mid process during a thunderstorm or grid switching event.
Compliance Testing
Certified laboratories use sag generators to verify that the power supplies in a tool meet the required curve. A failure in semi f47 testing indicates that the tool manufacturer must add more capacitance or a small ups to the internal control circuit. Successful testing provides a guarantee to the fab operator that the machine is ready for a production environment.
Production Protection
Maintaining uptime in a high volume manufacturing facility depends on the reliability of the tools under real world power conditions. Calling a tool ready for production before it meets semi f47 standards risks frequent unplanned downtime and high scrap rates. The cost of upgrading the equipment during the design phase is much lower than the cost of a single lost production lot.
