Meaning
Highly durable crystalline plates designed to transmit high-intensity coherent light while isolating sensitive optical systems from harsh external environments provide both mechanical protection and high optical throughput. Utilizing sapphire laser windows allows systems to operate at elevated temperatures and pressures where standard fused silica would fail or deform. This material offers a unique combination of broad transmission, high thermal conductivity and exceptional hardness.
Optical Performance
Transmitting light from the ultraviolet to the mid-infrared requires a material with low intrinsic absorption across the operating spectrum. Because sapphire laser windows have a high refractive index, they must be coated with anti-reflective films to prevent substantial reflection losses at each surface. These coatings must be designed to withstand the same high-power densities as the substrate itself.
Thermal Resilience
High thermal conductivity allows these optics to dissipate heat rapidly. This rapid heat transfer prevents the formation of destructive thermal lenses under high-power conditions.
Surface Damage
Resistance to mechanical abrasion and chemical erosion is a key benefit of this crystalline material. However, the high hardness of sapphire makes it difficult to polish, meaning that surface scratches can act as stress concentrators during mounting. Ensuring a high surface quality is necessary to avoid localized absorption and prevent the onset of laser-induced damage.
