Meaning
Process parameter determining the duration of time a printed circuit board spends in each heating zone of a soldering system. The reflow oven belt speed is measured in centimeters or inches per minute. It controls the thermal profile of the assembly, ensuring that the solder paste melts and solidifies correctly.
Finding the balance between speed and quality is the primary task of a process engineer.
Thermal Profile
Heat absorption depends on the time spent under the infrared lamps or convection fans. A slow reflow oven belt speed can overheat sensitive components, while a speed that is too fast results in cold solder joints. Calibration ensures the temperature curve matches the solder paste manufacturer’s requirements.
Production Throughput
Output volume is a direct function of how fast the boards move through the tunnel. Increasing the reflow oven belt speed allows the factory to finish more boards per hour. However, this increase must not compromise the integrity of the electrical connections.
Quality Control
Sensors at the end of the line monitor for defects caused by incorrect timing. If the reflow oven belt speed drifts, the entire batch of circuit boards may fail functional testing. Modern ovens use closed loop controllers to keep the motor speed within one percent of the target.
These systems ensure that the manufacturing process remains stable even during long production runs where thermal load varies.
