Meaning
Connection of the trailing end of a depleted component reel to the beginning of a fresh reel allows for continuous operation of a placement machine. In a high volume manufacturing environment, reel splicing eliminates the need to stop the line and re-thread the feeder mechanism. Special adhesive tapes and alignment tools are used to ensure the two strips move through the feeder without jamming.
Joint Integrity
Mechanical strength of the bond must be high enough to withstand the tension applied by the feeder during operation. If a reel splicing attempt fails, the tape may snap or the cover film may tear, leading to a machine stoppage. Operators use precision shims to align the sprocket holes of the two tapes perfectly.
Process Continuity
Automation systems use sensors to recognize the joint as it passes through the mechanism. Some advanced machines can read the barcode on the new reel during reel splicing to verify that the correct part is being loaded. This automated verification prevents the common error of loading a part with the wrong electrical value.
Material Loss
Reducing the downtime associated with material changes is the primary goal of this technique. Training staff in the application of splice tapes is a standard practice in modern electronics manufacturing.
