Meaning
Non productive operational costs accumulate when processing machinery is stopped to clean the barrel and screw of residual polymer. Minimizing purge downtime overhead requires using efficient cleaning compounds and optimizing the color or material transition sequence. This cost is a major factor in the profitability of high variety, short run production.
Labor Cost
Technicians must monitor the purging process continuously to ensure all old material is removed. This manual labor is expensive because the line is not producing saleable goods during this time. Long cleaning cycles increase the direct labor cost allocated to the subsequent run.
Material Waste
Purging requires running high viscosity compounds through the machine to scrub the surfaces clean. This purging compound cannot be recycled easily and is usually discarded as scrap. The volume of material wasted depends on the screw design and the transition from dark to light colors.
Operators must minimize the amount of compound used by following strict purging procedures and using chemical purging agents when appropriate.
Line Efficiency
High downtime reduces the overall equipment effectiveness of the manufacturing plant. A line that spends hours in a purge state has less available capacity to meet customer demand. This constraint forces the scheduling department to plan longer, less flexible production runs.
