Meaning
Industrial recycling activities in metal extrusion plants focus on capturing and reprocessing the metal discarded during the fabrication cycle. This internal reclamation activity, known as press scrap recovery, involves gathering extrusion butt ends, trial run rejects, and profile trimmings to feed them back into the melting furnace. The boundary of this recovery process is limited to clean, unpolluted process scrap generated directly at the extrusion press, excluding post-consumer scrap or contaminated materials that require chemical refining.
Scrap Classification
High quality scrap is sorted immediately by alloy grade at the press line to prevent cross-contamination. Since keeping alloy purity is critical for structural extrusion, any mixed batch must be downgraded to secondary applications. This classification step ensures that the recovered material can be melted directly without extensive alloying adjustments.
Operational Workflow
Discards and trimmings are collected in designated bins at the press and transported to the casting house. This material is then weighed and documented before being charged into the remelt furnace. This systematic tracking enables the plant to measure its true process yield against its initial forecast.
Economic Yield
Reintroducing this clean material directly into the production cycle reduces the need to purchase expensive primary metal ingots. A high rate of reclamation lowers the overall carbon footprint of the extrusion facility and improves operating margins. This closed-loop process protects the plant from raw material supply shocks.
