Meaning
A testing method evaluates emergency generators and power supplies by applying an artificial electrical load before the system is connected to live building circuits. This practice of pre commissioning load bank testing verifies the thermal and electrical performance of the equipment. It must be performed before the system is trusted to run critical operations.
Load Profiling
The test uses a mobile load bank to simulate various levels of power demand, including peak loads, to verify the cooling and exhaust systems are fully operational. Technicians monitor the engine’s coolant temperature, oil pressure and voltage stability over several hours of continuous operation under these extreme conditions. This process forces the engine to run hot enough to burn off fuel residue and clear the exhaust chambers.
Performance Audit
The results are compiled to prove compliance with local electrical safety regulations. These reports must show the system can handle sudden load steps without failing. This documentation is required to secure operational insurance for the facility.
Early Failure
Connecting a generator to a live building without this check can cause blackout damage if the system shuts down under load. A simple component defect can ruin sensitive IT equipment or medical systems. The resulting financial damage is far greater than the cost of the test.
