Meaning
A semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer produced from the ring-opening polymerization of caprolactam provides high mechanical strength and thermal resistance. Industrial applications utilize polyamide 6 for manufacturing durable components, engineering fibers, and high barrier films. This specific polymer exhibits excellent wear resistance and good chemical resistance to oils and solvents.
Moisture Absorption
Polar amide groups along the polymer backbone attract water molecules from the surrounding environment. Because polyamide 6 is highly hygroscopic, its mechanical properties change as it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. The absorbed water acts as a plasticizer, which increases impact strength but reduces tensile strength and stiffness.
Designers must account for this dimensional and mechanical change when specifying the polymer for precision components that operate in humid environments.
Processing Challenge
Injection molding requires careful pre-drying to avoid defects caused by polymer degradation. If a operator processes polyamide 6 without reducing its moisture content below the recommended threshold, the polymer undergoes hydrolysis in the barrel. This degradation reduces molecular weight and leads to flash, splay marks, and brittle molded parts.
Processors use desiccant dryers to prepare the resin before starting the production run.
Component Application
Industrial gears and automotive housings often exploit the high toughness of the material. By replacing metal parts with polyamide 6, automotive manufacturers reduce vehicle weight and improve fuel efficiency. These molded parts run quieter and require less lubrication than their steel counterparts.
