Meaning
Compressed air delivery systems require designated points where the main distribution line connects to individual tools or machines. A pneumatic drop is a vertical pipe that extends downward from the overhead header to provide a local connection. It typically includes a drip leg and a filter regulator unit to ensure the air is at the correct pressure and free of water.
Delivery Point
Efficient plant layouts place these connections as close to the work area as possible to minimize the use of long flexible hoses. A pneumatic drop ensures that the tool receives the full flow rate required for its operation. Using a rigid pipe for the vertical run reduces the pressure loss associated with coiled or tangled lines.
Local Regulation
Individual machines often require different pressures than the main system provides. Each pneumatic drop is usually equipped with its own gauge and adjustment valve to tailor the supply. This allows a heavy assembly tool and a delicate air bearing to run off the same central compressor without interference.
Usage Demand
Sizing the diameter of the drop is determined by the peak air consumption of the connected equipment. An undersized pneumatic drop will cause the tool to stall or lose power when the valve opens fully. Regular inspections of the seals and fittings at these points are necessary to prevent energy waste through silent leaks.
