Meaning
Specific security interest tied to a single item of property for the value of work performed on that item. A particular lien gives a service provider the right to keep a piece of equipment until the invoice for its repair or improvement is paid in full. This right does not extend to other debts or other pieces of property owned by the same client.
Service Connection
Direct relationship between the labor provided and the asset being held is the defining characteristic of this legal right. If a mechanic repairs a pump, the particular lien applies only to that pump and not to the motors or valves in the same shipment.
Retainment Authority
Possession of the goods must be continuous and lawful for the right to remain valid under the law. Once the owner pays for the specific work, the particular lien is discharged and the item must be released immediately.
Priority Status
Protection of the worker’s interest occurs even if there are other general claims against the owner’s assets. Because a particular lien is linked to the improvement of the specific object, it often takes precedence over prior security interests in that same item. This mechanism ensures that small contractors are paid for their direct contributions.
