Meaning
Departures of a light wave from its ideal planar or spherical profile as it propagates through an optical element degrade the focus and resolution of the system. The presence of optical wavefront distortion arises from inhomogeneities in the refractive index, surface irregularities or thermal gradients within the medium. This distortion is measured using interferometers that compare the transmitted wavefront against a reference flat or sphere.
It is a critical performance metric for lenses, windows and gain media in high-performance optical assemblies.
Wavefront Aberration
Material defects and surface finishing errors are the primary contributors to the deformation of the phase front. In optical wavefront distortion, the phase of the light is advanced or delayed across the beam diameter, causing aberrations such as astigmatism or spherical aberration. Minimizing these errors is essential for applications that require diffraction-limited focusing, such as laser cutting or high-resolution imaging.
Beam Performance
Thermal lensing during high-power laser operation creates dynamic phase distortions that can severely affect the focus of the beam. When optical wavefront distortion is high, the laser beam diverges, reducing the power density at the workpiece and lowering the efficiency of the material processing. Active cooling or the use of materials with low thermal expansion helps to stabilize the wavefront under heavy thermal loads.
Operational Limit
Specifying the allowable phase error in terms of fractions of a wavelength is a standard practice during the procurement of high-precision optics. If optical wavefront distortion is ignored during the design of a laser system, the achieved focal spot size will be larger than designed, which can lead to poor system performance. Measuring this distortion in the pilot assembly phase prevents the installation of defective optics into the final product line.
The cost of failing to check the wavefront quality early is the labor-intensive teardown of completed laser systems, which increases production lead times and labor costs.
