Meaning
Standardization protocols define the specific environmental conditions and exposure times used to accelerate the moisture absorption of molded polyamide parts. ISO 1110 accelerated conditioning provides a rapid method for bringing thermoplastic test specimens to their equilibrium moisture state before mechanical testing. This procedure replaces the months-long natural conditioning process with a method that takes only a few days.
Moisture Conditioning
Thermal chambers maintain high humidity and temperature to force moisture into the polymer structure. Under ISO 1110 accelerated conditioning, test specimens are exposed to seventy degrees Celsius and sixty-two percent relative humidity. This exposure speeds up the diffusion process, allowing the material to reach equilibrium quickly.
Polymer Equilibrating
Physical changes occur in the plastic as it absorbs water, including a decrease in stiffness and an increase in impact strength. Polyamides must be tested in this equilibrated state to ensure the test results represent the material’s actual behavior in service. Testing dry specimens can lead to misleadingly high strength and low toughness values.
Quality Control
Production timelines benefit from rapid testing methods that do not delay the release of manufactured batches. By using this accelerated procedure, quality control labs can verify the mechanical properties of a batch within days rather than waiting weeks. This efficiency reduces the warehouse space needed to hold material pending test results.
