Meaning
Precision-manufactured small-bore piping connects sensors and transmitters to the process lines in industrial plants. Installation of instrumentation tubing allows for the accurate measurement of pressure, flow, and temperature without the need for large-diameter pipe runs. These tubes are usually made from corrosion-resistant alloys to ensure long-term reliability in harsh environments.
Pressure Containment
Wall thickness and material grade determine the maximum operating limit of the system. Because instrumentation tubing is often used in high-pressure hydraulic circuits, it must undergo eddy current testing and hydrostatic verification before it leaves the factory.
Connection Reliability
Flaring or the use of compression fittings creates a leak-tight seal that can withstand vibration and thermal cycling. Using instrumentation tubing with high-quality ferrules prevents the accidental release of hazardous fluids into the work area. Maintenance teams check these connections during routine shutdowns to identify any signs of fatigue or thread galling.
Routing Configuration
Flexibility of the small-diameter pipe allows for complex paths around structural beams and other equipment. While a rigid pipe requires multiple elbows and welds, instrumentation tubing can be bent into shape with manual or hydraulic tools. This reduced number of joints lowers the potential for leaks and simplifies the installation process.
