Meaning
Glass transition temperature values change continuously as a reactive thermosetting resin system undergoes polymerisation. Initial Tg represents the transition temperature of the uncured or minimally cured material before it is subjected to the main heating cycle. This value serves as the baseline for assessing the reactivity and thermal stability of the starting formulation.
Manufacturers measure it to verify that incoming chemical shipments have not started to cure prematurely.
Batch Quality
Incoming quality control relies on determining this starting thermal transition to detect storage problems during transport. If the initial Tg of a resin batch is higher than the specification sheet states, the material has already experienced partial cure. This pre-reaction occurs when temperature control fails during shipping.
Rejecting these pre-reacted batches prevents moulding failures on the production line.
Process Window
Tooling design and cycle times depend on the temperature gap between the tool and the starting material. A resin with an incorrect initial Tg will melt and flow differently when injected into a hot mould, risking dry spots or incomplete fill. In high-pressure resin transfer moulding, this variation can ruin an entire production shift.
Monitoring this property allows process engineers to adjust injection pressures to compensate for minor batch variations.
Thermal Tracking
Thermal analysis instruments use modulated DSC to isolate the glass transition of highly reactive mixtures from their curing exotherm. This technique resolves the initial Tg with high accuracy. The resulting data enables precise simulation of the initial heating phase of the cure cycle.
