Meaning
Statistical indicators quantify how well a manufacturing process performs relative to its defined tolerance limits. Results matter. Using cpk capability metrics allows engineers to evaluate whether a production line produces parts within the acceptable range.
These figures account for both the spread of the data and the distance of the average result from the target center. A high value suggests the process is both stable and centered.
Process Stability
Calculating the index requires the process to be in a state of statistical control. Samples taken during a pilot run provide an initial estimate of future performance. If the results fluctuate wildly, the measurement reflects an absence of statistical control.
Specification Limit
Performance improves as the value of the index rises above one point three three. A lower score indicates that parts are likely to fall outside the customer’s requirements. Designers use this data to decide if the tolerance is too tight or if the machine needs a mechanical upgrade.
Yield Prediction
High scores suggest that the production yield will remain consistent over long durations. Capability indices provide a guard against the cost of scrap and rework. When a supplier’s forecast relies on these numbers, the buyer gains confidence that the demonstrated rate will match the contractual obligation.
