Meaning
Vibration isolation components that use pressurized gas and electronic feedback to counteract ambient or machine-generated oscillations. These active pneumatic mounts respond to sensor data in real time to adjust internal pressure and maintain a level platform. Detection of low-frequency noise triggers the response.
The system operates by detecting disturbances that passive rubber or spring isolators cannot effectively mitigate. Such technology supports sub-micron manufacturing environments where seismic noise or floor movement interferes with precision. Precision remains constant.
Isolation Mechanism
Pneumatic cylinders coupled with proportional valves provide the physical force needed to offset detected motion. Sensors within the active pneumatic mounts measure velocity or displacement at several points across the base. A controller processes these signals to command rapid pressure adjustments.
This closed-loop cycle prevents resonance from building during high-speed stage movements.
Response Efficiency
Feedforward control algorithms anticipate the inertial forces generated by the machine’s own internal axes. By applying a counter-force before the movement begins, active pneumatic mounts reduce the settling time required between operations. This capability allows for higher throughput in lithography or metrology applications compared to passive systems.
Demonstrated rates of vibration reduction typically exceed ninety percent in the one to ten hertz range.
Installation Constraint
Reliance on clean and dry compressed air adds facility overhead. If the air pressure fluctuates or fails, active pneumatic mounts revert to a passive state or a hard stop. Maintenance schedules must account for the degradation of seals and the calibration of delicate displacement sensors.
Calling for this level of isolation early in the design phase prevents the need for massive concrete foundations. The operational cost includes the energy consumed by the compressor and the specialized labor required for tuning the servo-loop parameters. Failure to optimize these settings results in oscillation overshoot or instability.
