Meaning
Atmospheric pressure holds a workpiece securely against a flat surface by removing air from the interface. Using vacuum fixturing allows for the machining or inspection of thin or delicate parts without mechanical clamps.
Part Stabilization
Uniform pressure across the entire surface area prevents the part from bowing or shifting during the production process. A vacuum fixturing setup is useful for large, flat items like semiconductor wafers and plastic sheets. This method provides a clean interface that does not damage the finish of the component.
Clamping Force
Magnitude of the hold depends on the surface area and the level of vacuum achieved by the pump. While vacuum fixturing offers enough grip for light milling or optical checks, it might fail under the high lateral loads of heavy metal cutting. Engineers must calculate the required force based on the tool path and the material weight to ensure the part does not move.
Surface Protection
Absence of hard metal clamps eliminates the risk of scratching or denting the workpiece. Because vacuum fixturing touches only the bottom side of the part, the entire top surface remains open for inspection. This accessibility makes it a preferred choice for high precision metrology and thin film applications.
