Meaning
Crystalline material composed of yttrium and aluminum oxides that lacks the intentional doping of rare-earth elements like neodymium. Chemically stable and mechanically hard, undoped yttrium aluminum garnet is a substrate used for high-temperature windows and as a base for composite laser crystals. Its physical properties match those of doped versions without the light-emitting behavior.
Passive Application
Bonding a layer of this material to the ends of an active laser rod helps to conduct heat away from the hottest part of the crystal. Because undoped yttrium aluminum garnet has no absorption at the laser wavelength, it acts as a transparent heat sink that reduces thermal lensing. This configuration allows the laser to be driven at higher power levels without distorting the output beam.
Stresses at the bond interface must be managed to prevent delamination under thermal load.
Thermal Capability
High conductivity prevents crystal thermal shock during rapid power cycles.
Supply Verification
Quality audits for this material focus on the absence of trace impurities that could cause parasitic absorption. A pilot run that uses undoped yttrium aluminum garnet must be followed by rigorous testing of the bond interface in composite crystals. If the supplier’s demonstrated rate of bond quality is low, the cost of manufacturing the final laser head will increase due to a poor yield of reliable components.
