Meaning
Dimensional discrepancies occur when the distance between tool positions in a progressive die does not match the feed length of the material. Station pitch error results in parts being stamped slightly out of position at each step of the process. This term is relevant only for multi stage stamping operations.
Accumulation Risk
Small errors at the beginning of the die can grow into large deviations by the final station. If station pitch error is not corrected, the pilots will not be able to enter the holes in the material strip. This misalignment causes the press to stop or the tool to break.
Part Geometry
Inaccurate spacing between stations leads to features being misplaced relative to each other on the finished part. When station pitch error exceeds the tolerance, the parts must be scrapped because they will not fit in the assembly. Checking the strip layout during setup identifies these errors before the full run begins.
Adjustment Method
Precision grinding of the die blocks or adjusting the feeder settings can help eliminate the discrepancy. Modern presses use electronic feeders that can be tuned to compensate for station pitch error in real time. Maintaining the tool at a consistent temperature also prevents thermal expansion from changing the pitch.
