Meaning
Receivables financing arrangements allow businesses to secure immediate cash against a single, high-value outstanding invoice rather than their entire ledger. In corporate finance and supply chain funding, single name invoice discounting is a selective funding mechanism where a business sells the payment rights of a specific invoice from a single creditworthy buyer to a financier at a discount. This arrangement provides rapid liquidity without committing the company’s entire sales book to a factoring agreement.
It is particularly useful for companies with a few large clients whose credit ratings are stronger than the seller’s own.
Funding Flow
The financing transaction begins when the seller delivers the goods and issues the invoice to their customer. Under a single name invoice discounting facility, the financier advances a percentage of the invoice value, typically between seventy and ninety percent, to the seller. When the customer pays the invoice at its maturity date, the cash goes directly to the financier’s account.
The financier then releases the remaining balance to the seller, minus a service fee.
Credit Assessment
Financiers evaluate the transaction by analyzing the creditworthiness of the specific buyer rather than the seller. This focus allows small businesses with high-quality clients to secure capital at favorable interest rates. It simplifies the underwriting process because only one corporate risk profile is reviewed.
Customer Notification
Borrowers must choose between disclosed and confidential arrangements for these facilities. In a disclosed arrangement, the customer is notified of the assignment and must pay the financier directly, while in a confidential arrangement, the customer is unaware of the bank’s involvement. The bank manages the collection risk by using a designated trust account in the seller’s name to receive the funds.
This setup keeps the supplier’s commercial relationships intact while securing the lender’s interest.
