Meaning
Process of converting a machine or production line from making one product type to another includes the physical exchange of tools and software. Performing a setup changeover efficiently is a requirement for high-mix manufacturing where batch sizes are small. This period represents a planned stoppage where no value is being added to the product.
Transition Efficiency
Sequence of events in a setup changeover must be standardized to minimize the time the machine is not running. Moving as many tasks as possible to the external phase, which happens while the machine is still making the previous part, reduces the total downtime. This preparation includes staged tooling and verified raw materials.
Downtime Reduction
Shorter duration of the internal phase is achieved through the use of quick-release fasteners and standardized height settings. A setup changeover that used to take hours can often be reduced to minutes through focused engineering. This speed allows the factory to respond more quickly to changes in customer demand.
Tooling Switch
Dedicated equipment for cleaning and calibrating the tools removed during a setup changeover ensures they are ready for the next run. Testing the first piece off the line confirms that the new configuration meets the quality standards. If the first part is scrap, the time spent on the conversion was not successful.
The final demonstrated rate of production is only reached once the machine has reached its operating temperature.
