Meaning
Statistical performance metric that evaluates the long-term capability of a manufacturing process to produce parts within customer specification limits. The ppk performance index is calculated using the overall standard deviation of the process, which represents the actual variation experienced by the customer over time. This index accounts for process centering by comparing the process mean to the nearest specification limit.
It is used as a standard measure of process output during initial product qualification.
Metric Computation
Calculating this index involves finding the minimum of two values, which are the upper specification limit minus the mean, and the mean minus the lower specification limit, each divided by three times the overall standard deviation. The ppk performance index directly captures any long-term process drift or shift. This makes it a realistic representation of process output over extended runs.
Capability Distinction
Distinguishing this index from Cpk is necessary because the latter is calculated using within-subgroup variation which ignores long-term shifts. While Cpk shows what a process is capable of doing under ideal conditions, the ppk performance index shows what the process is actually delivering. This distinction is essential for setting realistic production targets.
Quality Assessment
Rejecting a production run is often the result of an index value below the standard threshold of 1.33 or 1.67. A low ppk performance index indicates a high probability of producing non-conforming parts. This necessitates immediate process intervention or adjustments.
